Level 02 Award in Technical Understanding of Fire-Rated Cavity Barriers
Introduction
The Level 2 Award in Technical Understanding of Fire-Rated Cavity Barriers is a regulated qualification designed to provide learners with a fundamental technical understanding of fire-rated cavity barriers, their role in passive fire protection, and their correct specification, installation, and compliance with fire safety regulations.
Course Summary
Course Length: 12 hours Total Qualification Time (TGT) inc. 10 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
Teaching Method: One Day in-person seminar and activities
Assessment Method: Open-book assessment due within one month of completing course
Location: Preston Campus
Cost: £395 + VAT
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will:
-
Understand the regulations and standards applying to fire-rated cavity barriers
-
Interpret the given information relating to the work and resources when installing fire-rated cavity barriers
-
Select the required quantity and quality of resources for the methods of work to install fire-rated cavity barriers
Course Content
The course is delivered over four seminars, each addressing key aspects of Cavity Barriers. The core content of each seminar is described below:
Seminar 1 – Regulations, Standards and Guidance, including the Building Regulations, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Building Safety Act 2022. The course will also introduce concepts from fire strategy guidance including, though not limited to, Approved Document B, BS 9999 and BS 9991. This seminar provides the learner with a grounding knowledge in regulations and standards relevant to cavity barriers.
Seminar 2 – Cavity Barrier Classification, including key terms and definitions, the different types of cavity barrier and where they should be located in both internal cavities and external walls. This seminar provides the learner with comprehensive information about how cavity barriers are specified in a Fire Strategy, and the correct classification of materials intended to prevent unseen fire and smoke spread in cavities.
Seminar 3 – Cavity Barrier Testing and Specification, including the relevant testing standards for cavity barrier materials. This seminar gives the learner the opportunity to explore cavity barrier testing standards and to understand the theory behind how cavity barriers are classified, as well as their potential failure modes in a real fire scenario.
Seminar 4 – Cavity Barrier Installation and Maintenance, including quality checking of installations, planning necessary remedial works and the key findings for a Fire Risk Assessment and/or Fire Risk Appraisal of External Wall (FRAEW) surveys. This seminar provides the learner with skills to identify compliance issues in cavity barriers and to review relevant source material to find information about installations.
Note that this course is not intended to give competency in undertaking Fire Risk Assessments or FRAEW surveys, however may serve as a pathway towards the Level 03 in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment or Level 04 in Advanced Fire Risk Assessment (which includes a Unit on external wall condition surveys).
Who will Benefit?
This course will be of interest to a diverse range of learners, including but not limited to:
-
Construction professionals (e.g., contractors, site managers)
-
Architects and designers
-
Health and safety officers
-
Building inspectors
-
Fire Engineers
-
Fire and Rescue Services
-
Approval authorities
This course will be of particular interest to Fire Engineers, Fire Risk Assessors and Fire Surveyors.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisites for this course, although a basic understanding of construction or fire safety is beneficial.
Assessment
This qualification is competence-based and candidates must therefore demonstrate the level of competence described within the Qualification Specification.
Assessment for this course is by way of a multiple-choice open-book exam that learners must submit within one month of completing the classroom session. A full assessment brief is provided in Seminar 4 of the course.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the assessment, learners will be awarded the 'ProQual Level 02 Award in Technical Understanding of Fire-Rated Cavity Barriers'. All delegates will also be provided with a Delta Training Academy CPD certificate on the final day of the course.
