Level 02 Award in Technical Understanding of Structural Steel Fire Protection
Introduction
The Level 02 Award in Technical Understanding of Structural Steel Fire Protection is a regulated qualification designed to provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the requirements to correctly specify, install and inspect fire protection system applied to structural steel.
Course Summary
Course Length: 12 hours Total Qualification Time (TGT) inc. 10 Guided Learning Hours (GLH)
Teaching Method: One Day in-person seminar and activities
Assessment Method: Open-book assessment due within one month of completing course
Location: Preston Campus
Cost: £395 + VAT
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
-
Understand the regulations and standards applying to structural steel fire protection
-
Interpret the given information relating to the work and resources when installing structural steel fire protection
-
Select the required quantity and quality of resources for the methods of work to install structural steel fire protection
Course Content
The course is delivered over four seminars, each addressing key aspects of structural steel fire protection as described below:
Seminar 1 – Regulations, Standards and Guidance, including the Building Regulations, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and the Building Safety Act 2022. The course will also introduce concepts from fire strategy guidance including, though not limited to, Approved Document B, BS 9999 and BS 9991. This seminar provides the learner with a grounding knowledge in regulations and standards relevant to structural steel fire protection.
Seminar 2 – Elements of Structure Fire Ratings, including key terms and definitions, the different types of structural steel and the methods of applying fire resistance to steel. This seminar provides the learner with comprehensive information about how how to specify the correct fire resistance ratings, as well as common methods of application.
Seminar 3 – Structural Fire Resistance Testing, including the relevant testing standards for elements of structure. This seminar gives the learner the opportunity to explore fire resistance testing standards under both the national and European classification and to understand the theory behind how structural fire resistance is specified, as well as the potential failure modes in a real fire scenario.
Seminar 4 – Structural Steel Fire Protection Installation and Maintenance, including quality checking of installations, planning necessary remedial works and the key findings for a Fire Risk Assessment and/or Passive Fire/Compartmentation Survey. This seminar provides the learner with skills to identify compliance issues in existing structural steel fire installations and to review relevant source material to find information about required fire ratings.
Note that this course is not intended to give competency in undertaking Fire Risk Assessments or Passive Fire/Compartmentation Surveys, however may serve as a pathway towards the Level 03 in Intermediate Fire Risk Assessment or the Level 03 in Inspection and Testing of Intumescent Coatings.
Who will Benefit?
This course will be of interest to a diverse range of learners, including but not limited to:
-
Construction professionals (e.g., contractors, site managers)
-
Architects and designers
-
Health and safety officers
-
Building inspectors
-
Fire Engineers
-
Fire and Rescue Services
-
Approval authorities
This course will be of particular interest to Fire Engineers, Fire Risk Assessors and Fire Surveyors.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal prerequisites for this course, although a basic understanding of construction or fire safety is beneficial.
Assessment
This qualification is competence-based and candidates must therefore demonstrate the level of competence described within the Qualification Specification.
Assessment for this course is by way of a multiple-choice open-book exam that learners must submit within one month of completing the classroom session. A full assessment brief is provided in Seminar 4 of the course.
Certification
Upon successful completion of the course and passing the assessment, learners will be awarded the 'ProQual Level 02 Award in Technical Understanding of Structural Steel Fire Protection'. All delegates will also be provided with a Delta Training Academy CPD certificate on the final day of the course.
