Level 03 Award in the Inspection and Testing of Fire Resisting Door Installations

Introduction

The Level 03 Award in the Inspection and Testing of Fire Resisting Door Installations is a regulated qualification designed to provide learners with advanced knowledge in the inspection of fire resisting doors, including their specification, condition and identification of necessary remedial works. The course combines up-to-date theory and legal requirements with development of practical skills to ensure learners are able to apply knowledge on-site to inspect door installations and carry out competent fire door surveys.

The Level 03 Award delivered by the Delta Training Academy is a revolutionary fire door inspection course, incorporating emerging technology and practical elements in our innovative Skills Lab at our campus in Preston City Centre.

Course Content

The course is delivered over three days, with a mix of seminars, lectures, group activities and practical demonstrations. The core content of each day is described below:

Day 1 – Regulations, Standards and Guidance, including the Building Regulations, Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022 and the Building Safety Act 2022. The course will also introduce concepts from fire strategy guidance including, though not limited to, Approved Document B, BS 9999 and BS 9991. This classroom day provides the learner with underpinning knowledge on the importance of fire doors, the specification of them in real building scenarios and the importance of correctly installed fire doors for holistic building safety.

Day 2 – Fire Door Components and Surveying, including key terms and definitions, the different types of fire door and where they should be located within simulated building environments. The day incorporates both theory and practice through use of the Skills Lab to identify key fire door components and understand fire performance. Small scale experiments are undertaken in the Delta Fire Research Centre (FRC) to understand the failure mode of critical fire door components, as well as how to carry out an effective fire door survey.

Day 3 – Practical Skills and Examination, including practical surveying skills and use of software to optimise fire door survey reporting. A closed-book examination is sat followed by a practical skills assessment, carried out on a one-to-one basis in the Skills Lab with the assessor.

Note that delegates are not required to bring any fire door surveying equipment and all specialist equipment will be provided for the duration of the course (though must be returned). Delegates are however required to bring safety boots for use in the Skills Lab.
